The Surrounding Area
Our VA Medical Center is located in beautiful Southern Illinois. The city of Marion, with a population of over 17,000 people, prides itself on its hometown atmosphere.
Marion is located in Williamson County in the southern part of the state. Williamson County Tourism boasts that Southern Illinois has the largest collection of shopping, lodging, wineries and eating establishments in the region. Williamson County is home to some amazing hunting and fishing opportunities.
Major lakes in the area include Crab Orchard, Devil’s Kitchen, Little Grassy, Kincaid, Rend Lake and Cedar Lake. This region also includes the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge, Cypress Creek Wildlife Refuge and the Shawnee National Forest.
Marion is the home of the Southern Illinois Miners a minor league baseball team that is part of the Frontier League.
There is easy access to St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, Missouri as well as Paducah, Kentucky, for other cultural and entertainment activities.
Marion sits at the edge of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge with the Shawnee National Forest, Lake of Egypt and Rend Lake recreational areas just a few miles away.
